voting for FDP chair: setting the record straight
Florida Democratic Party Chair Elections are based on bylaws and a voting system that are antiquated. All candidates for FDP Chair agree they need to be reformed.
As the former Party Affairs Director of the FDP, I know the rules. And I want to correct some of the factual inaccuracies that are making the rounds.
How many votes it takes to win the Chair Election:
- The current FDP Spreadsheet of Executive Committee votes is here. The party’s list shows 1,152 votes up for grabs held by 203 eligible voting members of the Executive Committee.
- To win, you need a 50%+1 majority. Which means the next chair will need 577 votes to win the election
Recent press releases from candidates have said that they have the votes to win on the “Central Committee” and cite the winning number at 401 votes — This is inaccurate and should be corrected. The Executive Committee elects the Chair, and 577 votes are needed to win.
Who has the votes and what votes count:
According to the two candidates for FDP Chair who have publicly reported endorsements,
Annette Taddeo has 189 votes; and
Nikki Fried has 373 votes.
Again, 577 votes are needed to win. You can see the votes and the tracker here >>>
Elections should be fair and transparent:
While I have chosen a candidate that I want to see elected Chair, I do not have a vote. I do, however, want the facts to be out there. Elections matter, and the election for the next FDP Chair matters a great deal — maybe more than any other Party Chair elections we’ve had in my lifetime.
Thank you for all you do,
Rachel Berger
