Spotify Discover Weekly
Radio, walkman, cd-player, mp3-player and now SPOTIFY! How people listen to music changes during the recent years. Today, we have thrown all kinds of mediums, we meet Spotify. I think that Spotify is the most important app in my smartphone. On the one side, it offers millions of songs from many artists and its premium option provides us to listen to music everywhere even in subway, flight. On the other side, users discover new tracks or artists that never heard before or released newly by Spotify Radio, Discover and New Releases.
“Discover” is separated from other options, especially “Discover Weekly” suggestion makes it magic. “Discover Weekly” is private and personalized 30-track playlist published every Monday. It works based on what you listen, other Spotify users with similar interests and how often you use Spotify. More refined algorithm comes out here rather than “if you like this, also might like that“ approach. The algorithm scans millions of playlists from professionally curated ones to created by Spotify users that the user follows. Then, Spotify finds out new tracks that the user has missed to listen to from the cluster of playlists including user’s favorite songs. Also, It gives consideration to artists or songs that the user picks up recently. This process is called “collaborative filtering” and user experiences kind of uncanny feelings. Moreover, if user saves some suggested tracks in the “Discover Weekly” to his collection, this outcome is seen as positive feedback. However, skipping a track within 30 seconds means negative feedback.
Spotify describes taste of each user considering fine-grained genre distinctions in sounds and artists s/he listens to. The distinctions are not limited by just “pop”, “rock”, it also classifies sub genres like “new soul”, “indie r&b”. Spotify uses technology from Echo Nest, which is music intelligence and data platform that emerges the cluster of genres from music sites and analyzes various artists.
