The Path to Spiritual Renewal: A Guide to Being Born Again According to Scripture
In the Christian faith, the concept of being “born again” holds profound significance. It represents a spiritual rebirth, a transformative experience through which believers are renewed and restored in their relationship with God.
Jesus Himself declared the necessity of being born again, saying to Nicodemus in the Gospel of John, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3). In this article, we’ll explore the process of being born again as outlined in Scripture, providing a comprehensive guide to spiritual renewal.
- Recognize Your Need for Spiritual Rebirth
- Scripture: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” — Romans 3:23
- Explanation: The first step to being born again is acknowledging your need for spiritual renewal. Recognize that all have sinned and fallen short of God’s standard, necessitating a transformation of heart and mind.
- Remember, this is your first step to living your life to its fullness. And don’t think you can pursue happiness successfully. 2. Repent and Confess Your Sins
- Scripture: “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out.” — Acts 3:19
- Explanation: Repentance involves a genuine turning away from sin and a turning toward God. Confess your sins before Him, acknowledging your wrongdoing and seeking His forgiveness and cleansing. It starts by a change of mind.
- The Greek word from which we get the word repentance simply means change of mind. Of course, once you change your mind, which gives your life direction, you’ll shall have changed many other things in your conduct unknowingly. So, true salvation bears fruit.
- In Old Testament, one had to work hard to please God. In the New Testament. Jesus gives us the true Sabbath, true rest. So, once you repent, He gives you the helper who ensures your conduct changes.
- Note that there is works in both the old and new testaments. The only difference is REST. Today, works are a fruit of the work of God in you.
- Let me not end before I condemn the teachers who say there is no works in the New Testament. That is misleading. Others says works is good but not important as far as salvation is concerned. That comes from someone we can call a genuine fool (no hard feelings please.
- I know one great, respected teacher who believes in this madness, God will judge). If you plant a mango true, you expect mango fruits. If you plant maize, you expect to enjoy an ugali after three months. Full stop.
- I like the Sabbath REST, more than the signpost between man and God that points to our sanctification. Signposts are good, but the substance speaks volume.
- Jesus is the Lord. He will demand works of submission. Jesus is the Savior. He demands nothing. Some preach the savior. Looks fine because he is. Others preach the lord. But Jesus is both, no separating.
3. Believe in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord
- Scripture: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16
- Explanation: Place your faith and trust in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and the Savior of the world. Believe that His sacrificial death on the cross provides forgiveness of sins and eternal life to all who believe in Him.
- Whether you cry or not is not the issue. Some teachers claim if you cry you haven’t accepted Jesus yet. That’s unhelpful. Some people receive gifts by crying. Other don’t.
- The word is “BELIEVE.”
- The fruit you bear will let us know whether you ever believed. The fruit is KEY.
4.Receive the Holy Spirit
- Scripture: “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit.” — Ephesians 1:13
- Explanation: Upon believing in Jesus Christ, you are sealed with the Holy Spirit, who indwells and empowers you for Christian living. Yield to the Holy Spirit’s guidance and leading in your life. This is the helper I talked about above. He sets you apart from story tellers and the Pharisees who teach water but take wine.
5.Be Baptized in Much Water
- Scripture: “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” — Acts 2:38
- Explanation: Water baptism is an outward expression of the inward transformation that has taken place. It symbolizes dying to your old self and being raised to new life in Christ.
- As an obedient Christian, take it seriously and expect rewards thereafter.
6.Walk in Obedience and Holiness
- Scripture: “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’” — 1 Peter 1:15–16
- Explanation: Live a life characterized by obedience to God’s Word and pursuit of holiness. Allow the transforming power of the Holy Spirit to conform you into the image of Christ.
7.Abide in Christ and His Word
- Scripture: “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” — John 15:4
- Explanation: Cultivate a deep and abiding relationship with Jesus Christ by spending time in prayer, worship, and the study of God’s Word. Abide in Him, and He will abide in you, producing fruit in your life.
