You are right, but my experience here in Italy is that political leaders that have been insiders for 20+ years simply fail to understand the magnitude of the populist surge. They will underestimate and underplay it, dismissing it as a “very vocal but small minority” until they wake up… usually, the morning after the polls close with an unexpected (by them) and devastating defeat for them.

And there is an additional issue: that Trump can “credibly” claim to be willing to reform the system, because he, even by many Democratic voters, is perceived as an outsider. Hillary can’t; she has been making a living out of that system, so whatever promise of reform she can make now simply won’t be believable for most of the voters.
