- The Renaissance impact the scientific principles and technological advancement of mankind mostly because of the attitude of human in the era. The Renaissance is the era when human are freed from the authority and blind belief of god. Therefore, they realized the power in themselves each and believed in human ability. They started questioning things around them. They doubt , experiment and create because they are free to do so. The attitude towards human mind in this era upbrought many rebels of thoughts such as Galileo Galilei and Isaac Newton and bringabout the advancement of science and technology to the world.
2. What impact did the use of science and technology during the industrial revolution have on society?
- Since the technology has reached the level that we can use the power of nature such as coal, steam and oil, producing products was a lot easier and we could produce tons of products at a time. Also the technology has made the transportation and product shipping reach wider area of the world. Hence, the purpose of the production has changed from mostly personal needs and partly for trading(like in agricultural revolution) to the extreme purpose of trading and businesses. They produced mass products for mass market in the factories. The factories and markets became the center of the civilization. Not like before that people made all things by themselves and can stand on their own legs, people in the industrial age are less independent and what is important to them is to have a predictable career depended on one employer. Men moved to the cities to work in the factories leaving their wives with the first wave duties. That’s how gender inequality has developed. It also reduced the size of the family(called nuclear family) because the husbands and wives aer most of the time apart. I personally think that the industrial age gradually eliminated people’s motivation and creativity because their jobs required little skills, just the exact pattern of controlling machines. However, knowledge and information are available for more people through analog media and it made education easier. But still, the education is mass education and it was to fit children into the needs of the society , it’snot really an effective way of learning because it focused on the quantity , not the quality.
3) What is Toeffler’s third wave theory and where do you think Thailand is in his suggested theory of change?
- Toeffler’s third wave theory is the theory explained global trend and set it apart into 3 eras. The era were classified by the main technology in each era Since the long period of hunting-gathering, the first wave started off with agriculture. The second wave began after the use of natural forces such as wind, water and steam. And the third wave was born after the digital technology. The theory also talks about the effect of technology in each time that has on human society.
- I think Thailand is in the third wave already in terms of reaching technology advancement, we import a lot of technological ideas from other countries and have all those advanced digital technologies. However, from the social view, I think the mindset of most thai people ae still in the second wave. People still tend to give attention to the capital than the data. Mass production and unsustainable way of using natural resources can be found everywhere. Most of them are still interested in profits than compromising the technology with mother nature. Many people find copying is a better way than origination. After all I think Thailand is not completely in the third wave evolution.
