Embracing Innovation

These are my thoughts from a some what educated point of view. I have worked for a few companies so far in my few years in the professional space and i must say that growing from tech point of view is difficult and border line frustrating. I met a friend the other day and we were discussing programming as a profession and he say and i quote ”Programming should not be a job because it is frustrating” and i agree with him. This statement might not be 100% true but it speaks to a lot of situations in companies that think they embrace tech or try to. New ideas are never given a chance, evolving an idea is always met with more roadblocks than hurdles. Its that bad.

I remember one time we pitched an idea to a client. We thought through this idea and all the bells and whistles. It was brilliant. We knew it was because it was variation of another great idea that we improved on and made better. The idea was met with shock than awe. Its crazy. We live in a world where if you are in tech and you are not at least not trying to push the boundaries of what is possible, you should be defining new boundaries to accommodate the advancements of tomorrow. Its that simple.

Do not get me wrong, I do not expect all of the ideas people pitch to be greeted with open arms. What am saying is give each idea a fighting chance. Listen with an open mind. In most cases you can tell a good idea in the first 1 minutes of the pitch. Some ideas are very straight forward like those that will save you money, or grow your brand or make you more efficient, save time etc. But there is always this closed mindedness that people seem to think they are going to be replaced. At this rate, maybe we should be replaced if we are standing in the way of progress.

I have always thought that innovation, tech has to fail before it can be something that is worth holding on to and becomes a part of our lives. My favorite example as a Microsoft fan is the Surface devices.

Am sure we somewhat remember this product. It was a loss for the company. A huge loss at that. But it was a step in the right direction. Failure should not be a reason to stop but motivation to push through those boundaries. And a few years later, the same team that brought you the first Surface brings you the Surface Pro X. Persistent in their desire to change the status quo and prove that it could be done.

This is how far technology can go if its given a chance to fail, iterate, fail, iterate and get good.

Final words…umm let’s push holes in good ideas but not in the future that it could bring for us.
