Filtering & Re-sorting the Messaging Timeline

Since we launched Pepo in November 2016, Pepo members have created 7000 channels on topics ranging from Berlin Food Stories, eTramping, Nomadic Boys Gay Travel, Body Weight Training, Local Ladki, Your Man in Venice, to Globetrotter Girls.

Pepo members can create as many channels as they want — on anything — and every day there are more and more channels being added.

Within Pepo channels, everyday experts offer insider tips, take Q&A, tag places, and post with videos, photos, text, and live-moments we call “Spotlights.” Hundreds of thousands of posts, replies, and reactions have been added to Pepo already.

One interesting design challenge we have been working on is how to make it easier for people to find the best content within a Pepo channel when the content is normally presented in a messaging-like “timeline” view with the newest content always coming in at the bottom of the channel (like in a WhatsApp chat). Scrolling up through hundreds or thousands of posts can be tedious.

We just updated the Pepo app with a new innovation: Smart Filters on the top of every channel.

You can now easily filter any Pepo channel to:

-Trending Posts (recently active)

-Featured Posts (featured by the channel hosts)

-Q&A (just the top questions & answers)

-My Posts (any post you’ve personally interacted with)

-Spotlights (all the live moments that have been added)

As you scroll the Smart Filters fade away to maximize the viewable area, and then re-appear when you stop scrolling or scroll up.

Here you can see Globetrotter Girls filtered to just the top Questions that have been asked into the channel.

Once filtered, the top posts are viewed from the top of the page downwards, as opposed to the normal bottom position of newest posts in the channel.

In addition to using algorithms to filter channels, we also wanted to give Pepo Channel hosts control to feature their favorite posts. With a tap of the “star” icon on any post, Pepo Channel hosts can now feature posts within their channels.

We’ll be studying how Pepo’s members make use of these new messaging design innovations and we’ll continue to improve them and add more ways to find and discover the best and most relevant Pepo content.

Please also share your feedback with us on Pepo or via Twitter.

Thanks!
