Tips for Dealing With a Last Minute Move
When many of us move, it takes six to eight weeks from start to finish. However, there are some of us who do not have that luxury and need to move very quickly. Some moves as quickly as a week. Below are some tips to help that quick move go much faster.
Hire Movers
Hiring professional movers is often a great choice for a quick move. That being said, it is well worth your time to find the correct movers for the job and plan ahead. If you know you’re going to have to move soon, shop around and find movers that can accommodate your schedule by looking online. You can search for “movers nyc,” “movers ca,” or “movers az,” for example.
Go Through Items
Packing first and sorting through your things after is a rookie mistake. It is much easier to separate your things into three piles before moving. Putting things into a keep pile, a donate pile, and a throw away pile will make moving much easier as you will likely have less things to move. Also, donation companies may be able to pick up your unwanted items at your residence, saving you a trip.
Hiring Professional Packers
This will be up to you. Hiring packers expediates the moving process at a price. If you are short on time, the cost may be justified. Like hiring movers, plan ahead if you’re going to need packers. Get quotes from several different places and then hire the company that is most suitable. Go through the items you want packed and be sure to discuss how you want your things packed with the company you hired. Also, you may be able to hire unpackers when you arrive at your new home to help alleviate the stress of unpacking.
Boxes
Having used boxes is best when moving, but you may need to take a trip to the store to buy some new ones if need be. Another alternative to boxes is using shipping containers provided by a moving company. This option is especially convenient and helpful if you’re moving to another place locally. The company will drop off the containers and then pick them up at your new residence when you are finished with them.
Cleaning
As with many houses and apartments, they need to be cleaned when you’re moving to make it nice for the new renters or owners. This also ensures you get your security deposit back if you’re renting. You may be able to clean everything yourself, but if you have a large home and are short on time, professional cleaning is the way to go. Talk with the cleaners about where they need to focus their attention and how much time it will take to finish the job.
Clear Bins
Using clear bins or trash bags are great for organization when moving. Using these items eliminates the need to open boxes to search for things when unpacking. You can simply see the contents through the bag or container.
At the end of it all, be sure to tip the movers, packers, and cleaners. These can be difficult jobs and your gratitude is appreciated.
