Amy Schumer and the Ownership of Plus-Size

It would be tempting to say, “You just don’t get it.” Amy Schumer _is_ plus-sized, potato-faced, lumpy, and all the other stuff she accuses herself of being — among young female celebrities, but in no other crowd of people. And that standard is artificially restricted. The majority of women stand squarely outside it, and even the ones who are in it, many only succeed at it by unhealthy means — anorexia, bulimia, exercise bulimia, laxative abuse, etc.

Also, there has been a fair bit of size inflation going on. If she weights 160 and stands about 5'8", she probably wears what would have been a size 12 forty years ago, but now it’s a 6 or an 8.

And it’s charming that you’re defending her, but think about your motivation: could it be that you are doing it because she is, in fact, pretty enough for you to want to? If so, it only proves Ijeoma Oluo’s point even more. I’m in the arts, and I have time and time again seen people criticized and evaluated, not on the basis of their work, but on the basis of their looks. I’ve seen pretty and handsome people defended against comments that were only meant to be helpful and were justified.
