Hurricane Harvey: How to help Texas
Team Beto here. Hurricane Harvey has devastated the Texas coast, and much of Houston is still underwater. If you’re in a position to do so, we wanted to give you an opportunity to lend a hand to the communities across the region who are suffering a great deal in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
If you’re on the ground in Houston
- Sign up to volunteer with the American Red Cross.
- Houston officials calling for public citizens with boats and high-water vehicles to assist with rescues. Call: 713–881–3100
- Click here to find a disaster shelter through the American Red Cross.
- Call for non-emergency help: dial 3–1–1 if you live in Houston, or 2–1–1 if you live in the surrounding areas. If you are experiencing life-threatening conditions, call 9–1–1.
Where to send donations
Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund: “After receiving an overwhelming number of inquiries from citizens and companies who want to help, Mayor Sylvester Turner has established the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund that will accept tax deductible flood relief donations for victims that have been affected by the recent floods.
The fund will be housed at the Greater Houston Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity.”
The Texas Diaper Bank, based out of San Antonio, is putting together relief kit for families with very small children who need access to clean diapers in the midst of flooding and evacuations.
Portlight has provided inclusive relief to people with disabilities for twenty years. This group is working to ensure that people who require medical equipment and assistive technology have what they need after they evacuate.
The American Red Cross is helping the people affected by Hurricane Harvey in Texas and all across the Gulf coast with shelters, supplies and volunteers.
Brief campaign update
We have decided to cancel or postpone a handful of our Town Haulin’ Across Texas tour stops so that Beto can be on the ground, volunteering with communities affected by Hurricane Harvey. To see the most accurate list of events that are still on the calendar, visit facebook.com/betoorourke/events.

Thank you for doing what you can — whether you’re heading to Houston with your boat, or you chipped in a donation to one of the organizations providing relief to those affected by the hurricane. We will keep you posted with other opportunities to help.
