The Value of Multi-Typeface Design

It’s a shame some folks are typographic fundamentalists and cannot appreciate or understand other forms of visual typographic expression. The beauty of visual communication like all forms of communication is that it can be handled in many different ways and for different purposes. In it’s purest form, typography is meant to be transparent allowing the reader to easily distill complex information. Other times typography interjects personality and helps establish tone in a way that evokes emotion. The job of a designer is to walk that fine balance and know which dials to use in every application.

The danger for designers often lies in not knowing the rules or how to break the rules, years of experience only make it easier. Bethany, you clearly understand from your range of examples the value of typography and know when to push the boundaries and the crazy thing is that you’re early enough in your career that it’s only going to better. Your Eephus League case study reflects a love for the sport of baseball and it’s eclectic visual history. Is your visual aesthetic on your personal project meant to appeal to everyone? No, but the people that do appreciate it can see the love and care that went in into picking just the right pairings.

Keep on pushing the envelope and sharing the excitement it brings you. For those that are quick to judge but mostly complain, I encourage you to place your creative work for the world to see.
