Why I’m Backing Ed Hernandez for California Lt. Governor
While the Trump Administration continues to deny climate change and institute irresponsible environmental regulatory roll-backs, California remains a beacon of hope in our fight to save the planet.
Over the years, California has set the national standard for environmental protection. As a former member of the State Assembly, I am proud to have played a key role in helping make many of these advancements a reality. While as a state we have made enormous gains in recent years, the fact is we have much more work to do to combat climate change and build upon California’s bold and ambitious agenda for safeguarding the environment.
Californians may know me from my time of service in the legislature, but a lot of folks might not know that I spent years working for the some of the nation’s most progressive organizations, including the California League of Conservation Voters, the Consumer Attorneys of California and the Environmental Defense Fund. And, I currently serve as the Executive Director of the California Women’s Law Center where we pursue justice for women and girls every day.
Because I am devoted to the causes of progressivism and environmental protectionism, I feel compelled to share my experiences with my good friend, State Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez, and the importance of the race for California Lt. Governor. Our state needs more champions like him, and I firmly believe that with Dr. Ed serving as Lieutenant Governor, we will continue to lead the charge for smart government policies that ensure clean air and water are available to all, while creating a greener, safer, more fair and sustainable economy for everyone.
I started my career in public service working with an amazing California Lt. Governor: Leo McCarthy. Therefore, I know firsthand how important the office of Lt. Governor is, particularly when it comes to environmental issues. In addition to the office’s natural bully pulpit, California’s Lt. Governor serves as Chair of the State Lands Commission, which manages millions of acres of state-owned land, and also serves as a member of the California Coastal Commission.
Since the Lt. Governor leads the three-member State Lands Commission which controls and protects all state-owned land and waterways, it’s absolutely vital that we elect the person with a proven track record of protecting California’s land and open space, while also advancing efforts to combat climate change. This experience is particularly critical given the Trump Administration’s recent attempts to enable off-shore drilling off California’s coastline.
Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez is the only candidate in the race for Lt. Governor with a proven record of defending our environment. In the tradition of true leaders who serve as California’s Lt. Governor, I wholeheartedly endorse him.
As one of California’s 27 State Senators who voted for one the most forward-thinking environmental laws in America, SB 350, the Clean Energy and Pollution Reduction Act, Senator Hernandez has demonstrated his commitment to the environment and renewable energy prioritization.
But beyond SB 350, Senator Hernandez has solidified his commitment to tackling climate change and keeping our environment safe and clean. He backed SB 32, the California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2016, which established stricter carbon emission regulations, and he provided a crucial vote for SB 100, which would have advanced California’s goals for 100% renewable energy attainment, had it passed in the legislature.
The fact is, experience matters.
Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez isn’t just a friend. He’s someone I can count on as California’s next Lt. Governor to protect our environment, our public lands, address climate change, and move our state toward 100% renewable energy power.
Since we cannot count on Washington to prioritize the global crisis of climate change, we must look to leaders in California like Senator Hernandez to lead the fight against regressive environmental policies.
Senator Ed Hernandez is the forward-thinking candidate for Lieutenant Governor we need to expand California’s legacy as a progressive force in the years ahead. I hope you’ll join me in supporting his candidacy.
