Plants grow, mature and change on a time scale that makes it difficult for the human mind to track. Over the course of a dozen hours, a leaf may turn towards the light. Yet to our eyes it is the same leaf, and we hardly notice the change, it is happening so slowly.

Or maybe a little discoloration is developing on a leaf. Has it been there yesterday? We don’t remember. And once that discoloration becomes problematic rot or decay, we are not sure how well the treatments are working.

Plants change too slowly, calling for tools to help with tracking these changes. Plant Health Tracker app for iPhone is one such app. Developed to track long term changes, the app is based around the following concepts:

The Photo Library helps keep all the plant photos in one place over extended period of time — no need to scroll through your camera roll to find two relevant pictures — they are all right in front of you.

Time line and strict date adherence — helps you understand the time scale of changes you are observing in your plants’ health.

The video export feature puts all your photos in one video you can save or share for future examination. A combination of time scale with photos

HOW TO USE THE APP:

  1. Create a record for a new plant by tapping the + button in top right
  2. Find a good angle for your photo
  3. Take the first photo
  4. All subsequent photos rely on the previous photo for alignment
  5. When taking a photo, tap the screen to focus camera and align transparent cutout to help you align two photos
  6. As you take a photo, see the little colored hints on the screen as they tell you how to rotate, tilt or turn your phone to take a photo from the same orientation as before
  7. Save your photos, once you have several — you can export them as a video.
  8. The video export process takes a few seconds, after it’s completion, you can share the video or upload it online. A copy is saved to your camera roll as well.
  9. For best results, track your plants over a course of a few weeks.
