Former & Current SLU Student Leaders: We Demand the University Do Better for Black Students and Other Students of Color
To: Fred Pestello, Ph.D., president of Saint Louis University
CC: Mike Lewis, Ph.D., provost; Jonathan Smith, Ph.D., vice president for diversity and community engagement; Debra Lohe, Ph.D., interim vice president for student development; David Heimburger, vice president and chief financial officer; James Moran, assistant vice president and director of the Department of Public Safety
We, former student leaders of Saint Louis University, write to express our disappointment at SLU’s inadequate response to the George Floyd Uprising.
Neither our disappointment, nor SLU’s response, are a surprise to anyone. Our respective experiences at SLU were marked by a culture of casual yet institutionalized white supremacy, anti-Blackness, racism, and ahistorical approaches to understanding the present. Many of us joined a variety of student organizations to make the campus culture a more equitable one equipped with a better understanding of race and the ongoing oppression of historically marginalized communities. Many of us failed to realize this because of the apathetic response from the University’s administration. As former student leaders at SLU, we recognize the pervasive ways in which the University has historically silenced or tempered the voices of Black students and other students of color. We also recognize the various ways that we, and other often well-intentioned student leaders, caused more harm than good in our involvement in student organizations and throughout campus in fighting for a more equitable and just SLU.
The most obvious example is the Clock Tower Accords (CTAs), the defining “victory” of Dr. Pestello’s first year as president of the university. Many student activists and their allies across the St. Louis region participated in the discussions surrounding the CTAs and many more watched with hope for a better SLU. Many then watched with dismay as the University’s administration again ignored and even actively undercut the potential for real progress along these agreed upon terms. We were and remain continuously disappointed in the lack of funding, resources, and priority given to the Clock Tower Accords, as well as most actions related to equity and inclusion for marginalized communities on campus. Many of us graduated from SLU not with pride at being so-called “[people] for others” but with pessimism and exhaustion, burned out from our experience as student leaders striving to build a better SLU both for ourselves and for marginalized communities on campus.
We make the below demands not in the spirit of camaraderie with the University’s administration that many of us worked in good faith to develop in our time as students, but in the spirit of solidarity with current students, particularly Black students and other students of color, who continue to survive and even thrive at SLU, despite SLU.
The following demands come with an important caveat: we unequivocally and unconditionally support and endorse any demands that Black students have made or will make, even if those demands contradict the demands listed below.
The demands are thus:
- Saint Louis University must immediately and permanently divest from the militarized SLMPD.
- Saint Louis University must transform its Department of Public Safety (DPS). This includes: disarming DPS; establishing a “civilian oversight board” that includes students, faculty, staff and contracted workers to review DPS conduct, and practicing total transparency in regards to DPS’s budget. Additionally, DPS must commit to never cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE); this includes never asking any individual on campus — whether they are students or not — their immigration status.
- Saint Louis University must immediately stop the aggressive gentrification of Midtown St. Louis.
- Saint Louis University’s leadership must issue a statement apologizing for not realizing the Clock Tower Accords and design a plan to begin fulfilling each remaining Accord. This should include making the Accords visible on campus. Given the financial challenges the University is currently facing, President Pestello must guarantee that the programs that received “permanent” increased budgets as part of the Accords do not receive cuts now or in the future.
- The President of the University must be accessible to all members of the campus community. The President must hold regular, accessible town halls for all members of the campus community to express their concerns and share their lived experience at SLU. Additionally, in line with the practice at other universities, the President must hold open office hours for all members of the campus community. Meetings with the Student Government Association (SGA), the Faculty Senate, the Staff Advisory Board or other governing bodies and their officials can never replace these.
- Saint Louis University must end the practice of free labor in the name of “diversity and inclusion.” This includes providing all members of “diversity-related” working groups, committees or panels with a mutually agreed upon stipend. Additionally, SLU SGA and University leadership must lay out a plan to compensate and provide resources to “DLC CSOs” and other student groups that often serve as the only culturally appropriate resources for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ students.
- Saint Louis University must commit to increasing the budget of the student counseling center specifically for hiring Black therapists. The University must ensure that Black students have a priority for access to their services.
These demands are drops in the bucket compared to the emotional labor that countless students, particularly Black students, have offered to SLU, a school that claims to prepare students to make the world a better place. We maintain hope that SLU and its graduates can realize that lofty mission; fulfilling these demands will be a tremendous step on that path.
