17 Days to Go: Turning 50! 50 GlowTips I’m sharing to Spread the Glow!
17 Days to go until I turn 50! So I’ve decided to share 50 GlowTips to Get Your Glow ON — one per day, in no particular order of importance and just as they come to me…
And here’s GlowTip 34: Never mind what anyone else thinks you ‘should do’. Nobody knows you better than you!
Every man and his dog is going to have an opinion on your life (and often the dog’s opinion is the most valid!). And that’s ok — everyone’s entitled to their opinion. Often it’s uninvited, which can be annoying.
And some people like to dole out their opinions because it makes them feel superior. (“Well….in your situation…”) I’ve noticed that it’s generally the people who don’t have their shit together, who have the loudest opinions about other people.
A lot of the time people give you their opinion with good intentions and out of concern for ‘your best interests’. But that doesn’t always mean that it’s right for you!
Nobody knows you, better than you!
Often I’ve looked in horror, at my nearest and dearest and wondered who they were even talking about! Their suggestions were so out of touch with who I am — it was as if they didn’t even know me at all!
One of the most emPowering things I did for myself was to stop ignoring myself and to start trusting myself.
For years I didn’t trust myself to make a decision. I didn’t think I was ‘capable’ of making the ‘right decision’. I mistakenly believed that everyone else knew better than me.
I’d run from this one to that one, asking what they thought. “Should I/ shouldn’t I — what’s *your* opinion?”
And every time I ignored myself, things never turned out very well!
We’ve all taken someone else’s advice, at some time or another — and then landed up wishing we hadn’t. Especially when we didn’t listen to ourselves — when we were right all along!
I’ve let myself down enough times to be wary of whose advice I take these days. I can’t think of many times when anyone can make a better decision for me, than me.
So before I decide to follow anyone else’s advice, I check out where it’s coming from. What experience do they have? Are they ‘walking their talk’? Are they somebody I respect and admire?
Friends, family, colleagues and the media will all try to influence your opinion. And in the era of ‘personal branding’ and social media, suddenly everyone’s an expert!
But it’s important that you think for yourself! Because if you’re living your life according to what other people think you should do, you’ll be living for everyone else but you!
We are all travelling our own unique journey and there’s no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to being YOU.
It’s empowering to trust yourself. It’s a great feeling when you believe in yourself enough to do what you know you should do. Because nobody knows better than you what rocks your happiness and Gets your Glow ON!
