25 Days to Go: Turning 50! 50 GlowTips I’m sharing to Spread the Glow!
25 Days to go until I turn 50! So I’ve decided to share 50 GlowTips to Get Your Glow ON — one per day, in no particular order of importance and just as they come to me…
And here’s GlowTip 26: Get back into Nature to reconnect with Yourself
Most of us are out of touch with our true selves. We don’t know when we’re tired, or when we’re hungry. And many of us don’t even know what makes us happy.
In our quest for ‘progress’ we’ve removed ourselves from the natural environment. And we’re destroying the natural environment, because we’ve forgotten that we are part of it. We are animals who need nature to survive. And we’ve forgotten who we are.
The great thing about spending time in nature, is that is reminds us who we are. It allows us to reconnect to the earth around us. It recalibrates us. And it helps us to reconnect with ourselves.
I feel beyond lucky to have grown up in Cape Town — a city that is surrounded by nature. When I was a child we lived in a suburb on the slopes of Table Mountain, with a forest behind us, and a mountain stream that flowed through our garden.
We didn’t even have TV in South Africa in those days. We spent most our time playing outside with our neighbourhood friends.
We were lucky to be able to go into the bushveld on holiday. We learned first-hand about the wild flora and fauna of Africa, in its natural, unspoilt habitat.
And these days I still spend as much time outdoors as I can. Luckily that’s almost every day. I live right at the beach and I run along the beachfront in the morning. I’ve got whales and seals and dolphins for neighbours and I love it when they come by to say Hi! I can spend hours staring out, watching the sea. And at night I love watching the stars and the moon hanging over the bay, and falling asleep to the sound of the waves.
I’m not a big city girl. As much as I love to visit cities like London, Paris and New York — after a few days there, I start feeling frazzled and claustrophobic. I can’t bear all the people bumping and pushing and rushing. I miss breathing in fresh, clean air and being surrounded by wide-open spaces.
But that being said, I’m no bushwhacker either. When it comes to my comforts and conveniences, I’m not keen to go back to basics. I’m definitely 21st century!
A few years ago my brother invited me to Botswana for a week’s holiday on the Chobe River. I was in the middle of leading a pitch for an ad agency. We were presenting to the client that very same week.
So I said I wouldn’t be able to go to on the trip. All I could think about was delivering the job. And control-freaky me hated the idea of handing it over to someone else.
But when I told the client that I’d been invited — and turned it down — he was horrified. It was a week on a luxury houseboat in one of the most beautiful places in Africa — and I thought work was more important!
So after making sure (a zillion times!) that I’d dotted all the i’s and crossed the t’s of the pitch proposal, (and instructing the agency to keep me informed at all times), I headed off, with my laptop, into the African bush.
It was fantastic to be out in the bush. But I was still in work mode and the internet was dodgy — either it didn’t work at all, or it was so slow that it kept timing out. I was stressing out big time.
And then we were out in the middle of the Chobe river and there was absolutely no signal. So after fretting and trying repeatedly to connect — I had no choice but to close the laptop and give up!
I was feeling a bit twitchy and disconnected. But it was the best thing that could have happened! Because after two days of peace and quiet and stillness, I felt like a different person. I had connected back with myself.
Nature is a great healer. And one of the best things we can do for ourselves is to get off the couch and out of the shopping malls and go outside. It doesn’t have to be out in the wild. Nature is all around us — in the garden, at the beach, or in a park.
And if you can’t get out as often as you’d like to — gardening and growing things is a fantastic way to reconnect. Even if you only have one pot-plant! You’ll still need to get to know it — what it likes, a little sun, some more water, maybe a little plant food…and that way you’re reconnecting to the natural world.
There is nothing like spending time in nature to help flush out the cobwebs and put Life in perspective. It’s an instant tonic for mind, body and soul.
So if you’re feeling a little low on Glow — go outside and let Nature UPlift you.
Fuelling UP with earth energy always restores and revives us and Gets our Glow On!
