4 Days to Go: Turning 50! 50 GlowTips I’m sharing to Spread the Glow!
4 Days to go until I turn 50! So I’ve decided to share 50 GlowTips to Get Your Glow ON — one per day, in no particular order of importance and just as they come to me…
And here’s GlowTip 47: Break your own ridiculous rules and free yourself to enjoy yourself!
We’re all governed by so many rules, whatever society we’re in — and whether we agree with them or not.
Most of us spend our lives in a disciplined routine, which is essential for streamlining, organising and getting things done.
But when it comes to our personal lives, we often limit ourselves with our own ridiculous rules. We place so many terms and conditions on life.
We can’t have this, until we’ve done that. We can only be friends with this one, if they’re part of that thing. We can’t have fun until it’s the weekend…
All the can’ts, have-tos and must-dos can make life a bit dull and humdrum and suffocate the enthusiasm right out of us.
Because life doesn’t fit into neat little boxes. And if we’re too buttoned-up, there’s no room for creativity and spontaneity and fun!
I’m a disciplined person. I’m committed to whatever I do. But there’s no joy in being fanatical!
I’ve learned to break some of my own ridiculous rules, if it lets more of the Good Stuff in!
It’s ok to nap on the couch in the winter sun, on a weekday afternoon! (I used to stare at the sun shining on the couch with longing. Until I realised there was nothing stopping me from enjoying it — except myself!)
It’s ok to leave the house with last night’s dishes in the sink so I can be on time.
(I had to make sure my kitchen was sparkling, even if it meant I was running late. Because God forbid I should die when I’m out and people should go into my flat and see that I left a mess. Well, a few dirty dishes. But still…)
And I’m sure you’ll agree — that’s ridiculous!
A lot of us have our days, weeks and months planned in advance. We’ve got routines and obligations and duties and chores. And it’s good to be disciplined, because that’s how we get things done.
But sometimes we do need to ease up on ourselves and break our own ridiculous rules. It’s ok to want to do something different. It’s ok to do whatever we feel like doing. It’s perfectly normal! We’re not machines. We can’t do it the same old same old — day after day, after day.
If your rules are holding you back from the Good Stuff, then it’s time for a rule review! Break your rules now and then. Chuck out the ridiculous ones completely! And you’ll free yourself to enjoy yourself and Get your Glow On!
