Good article.

Phillippe Starck is an excellent example of superficial styling, as opposed to timeless design.

In fact, most “fashion design” does not really rise to the level of design, but remains at the level of styling. That is evident from the way many fashion “designers” use the term “concept” when talking about design.

The first time I heard a fashion designer say that his “concept” for his evening gown was “Red”, I was flabbergasted by the conceptual vacuum behind the fashion “design” process.

As an architect, “concept” has always meant something profound, even sacred. It meant that a building’s form must reflect the structure that holds it up (Mies van der Rohe), or that a building’s form must reflect the space within to be used, rather than the shell without (Frank Lloyd Wright).
