A Simple Blog Template for Compelling Business Blogs

I teach business owners how to create and publish blogs to be used as marketing tools. The goal of business blogs is to attract an audience, engage them and nurture them into paying clients and customers. But because blogging can seem like a daunting challenge, I’ve created a simple blog template to make it super easy.

Before you do anything, of course, you must decide on a topic. I have lots of easy ways to come up with blog topics to engage your audience, but let’s assume you have a great topic already figured out and you’re ready to write.
Nearly every one of your blog posts will follow this same formula that you can use as a template:
- Headline
- Introduction
- Body
- Conclusion
It’s reminiscent of how you learned to write an essay in school, right?
But there’s difference. In marketing blog writing you should write the Body first. This may seem counter-intuitive to you, but here’s a secret I’ve discovered: it’s so much easier to create all the other elements of your post after the Body is completed.
Write the Body First
The Body should solve a specific problem that you know your ideal clients or customers are struggling with. It could also be an issue that you feel strongly about, but remember; your ideal clients and customers have the entire World Wide Web at their fingertips. And since most people search online to get answers and solve problems, the perfect scenario is when the people that you really want to work with actually find you through your blog. You’re going to give them little bits of your special sauce to entice them to them to find out more about you and your business.
You want your ideal client or customer to think, “If her free stuff is this great, I can only imagine how great her paid stuff is!”
Create a Strong Introduction
Next, write the Introduction. Fact: the average person will read just one or two paragraphs of your blog post and then decide if it’s worth it to read on. All within a few seconds. So, your Introduction has to be strong. It should make a promise that it is worth it to keep reading. This is probably the biggest challenge in blog creation.
The Introduction is also the place where you can introduce yourself. Many of your readers don’t know you yet, right?
Add a Simple Conclusion
The Conclusion is really simple at this point. Simply restate the problem or issue and allude again to the solution. Yes, it’s that simple.
Save the Headline for Last
You may be wondering, what about the Headline? Yep, the Headline is more important than anything else in your blog. In my blog template, it’s the last element you should create. Our big challenge is to get people to click and read the blog, and there are some tricks to it. At the bottom of this post, you’ll find a link to my list of magic words for irresistible blog headlines, to help you with this. It happens to be the most popular blog post I’ve ever published, by the way!
So, most marketing blog posts follow the same basic formula I’ve just laid out. There certainly is more to successful marketing than just this blog template, but this is a great place to start. If you’re ready to go to the next level and learn how to optimize your posts so they show up on Google, create freebies like the one above, and use social media and email more effectively, subscribe in the box on the upper right side of this page.
