5 Movies You Have To See This Halloween

I love the month of October. The heatwaves are over so I’m not desperately trying to cool myself down all day everyday, but it’s still warm enough to go out in just a cardigan. Everyone starts getting ready for the holiday season, so if you take a trip down the high street, tins of sweets are on sale and the wrapping paper and Christmas cards are already on display. But even considering that I’m British and it’s not really considered a holiday over here in the UK, my favorite part of October is Halloween. Being a big fan of all things weird and creepy, I love this American tradition. Stuffing our faces with chocolate and ghost shaped cookies, toffee apples, carving spooky faces into pumpkins, and connecting with our inner child by dressing as our favorite characters…what’s not to love? Now I’m far too lazy to take part in most of these activities (I’m more than keen to eat sweet treats until my teeth fall out), but every Halloween I get comfortable on the sofa and I take full advantage of all the classic horror flicks on every channel of my TV. This is without a doubt the highlight of my year every year.
While I enjoy being made to jump from the comfort of my own home, many like to be scared in the company of others at the cinema. Here are some of the horror flicks set to be released ready for Halloween this October.
Annabelle
Both a prequel and spin-off to the film that terrified us all last year. Annabelle starts with the same opening scene from The Conjuring, in which paranormal investigators Ed(Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren(Vera Farmiga) are being told by two young women and a man about a doll that they believe to be haunted. The doll’s name is Annabelle.
Skip back a year later and we are introduced to John and Mia Gordon who are expecting their first baby. After disagreeing about John’s readiness to be a father, John buys Mia a doll in an attempt to cheer her up. Mia is over the moon, she had been looking for this vintage one of a kind doll for a long time and is happy to add it to her collection.
One night the Gordon’s home is invaded by a satanic cult who attack them both violently. But it isn't only blood they've left behind with all their terror and destruction. They've awakened a force so evil that even the horror they've inflicted is no match for the sinister entity that is Annabelle.
Horns
Based on Joe Hill’s (Stephen King’s son for those who didn't know) 2010 dark fantasy novel, Horns follows the story of Ig Perrish(Daniel Radcliffe). Ig’s girlfriend, Merrin(Juno Temple), is violently raped and murdered and Ig is the number one suspect.
After a night out, Ig wakes up with a bad hangover and horns protruding from his forehead. If this isn't weird enough, Ig realises these horns have a special power: they make people confess their sins and give in to their most selfish and unspeakable impulses. With his horns and the ability they give him, Ig searches for the answers to his girlfriend’s murder and seeks revenge on those responsible.
Ouija
A teen-aged girl is killed under very mysterious circumstances after filming herself playing with an ancient Ouija board.
Desperate to contact the girl and find out what happened to her, a group of friends decide to try to talk to her through the same Ouija board, but they find that a Ouija board is not to be meddled with when they have to confront the dark powers of the spirit board.
Dracula Untold
Gary Shore’s feature film debut focuses more on the mythology and history of the Dracula tale than it does on Bram Stoker’s vampire story. Dracula Untold is the story of Vlad The Impaler, (Luke Evans),the man before the monster.
Transylvanian prince Vlad Tepes III is forced to take dark and desperate measures when his period of peace is disrupted by Sultan Mehmed II. A man who demands 1000 of his principality’s boys, including Vlad’s own son, to join his army.
Desperately seeking a way to save his son, wife, and kingdom, Vlad travels to Broken Tooth Mountain where he meets and bargains with an ancient sorcerer. Vlad is given the strength of 100 men, speed that exceeds that of a falling star, and the power to destroy his enemies…but it comes with a burden. The Prince will have an uncontrollable thirst for human blood.
The Devil’s Hand
Formerly titled ‘Where The Devil Hides’, The Devil’s Hand follows the story of a little village called New Bethlehem. There is a prophecy in this small commune that if a girl is born on the sixth day of the sixth month, the devil may inhabit her soul on the eve of her 18th birthday.
On the eve of the 18th birthday of six different girls born on the sixth day of the sixth month, they start to disappear and are presumed dead. Is this the prophecy coming true as the elders of the village suspect? Or is this the work of a suspicious elder themselves?
Care to share any upcoming horror movies I may have missed? Or maybe you’ve already seen the earlier releases. I’d love to hear about them. Happy Halloween everybody, have a spooky one!
