Think Less, Do More

Still sitting on an idea you had months ago? Too afraid to bite the bullet and finally take action? Scared silly over making a fool of yourself? This sounds a lot like me. The perfectionist and over-thinker within makes it nigh impossible to step outside of my comfort zone and make things happen.

So instead of giving in to the reel of over-analytical questions that pop into my mind before doing absolutely anything, I’ve taken to flicking the ‘off’ switch in my brain and letting my body run on autopilot. And I’ll tell you something, it works. Let me share some examples with you:

Example #1 — Mobile App Start-up. Brain On: I’m a novice. I don’t know enough about the process. What if it fails? Will I be able to devote enough time to such a seemingly big project? Brain Off: Picked up the phone. Spoke to a few people. It’s happening.

Example #2 — To gym, or not to gym, that is the question! Brain On: Do I have enough energy today? Am I sufficiently hydrated? Will my knees do that funny thing where they swell up? I’ll look fat compared to some of the girls there. Brain Off: Get dressed, get to the gym and get on that treadmill. You’ll feel much better post-workout, promise.

Example #3 — Writing my first blog. Brain On: It’s unknown territory. I’m not a natural writer. What if I’m not interesting or funny? Why would people care about what I have to say? Brain Off: Begin typing. Don’t stop. Edit. Post.

So the next time your mind stops you in your tracks, think less and do more. Life’s too short to spend those extra moments over thinking something!
