Studies have shown that very successful people have certain self traits in common, as do those who are not so successful. Some self traits that unsuccessful people have in common are:

· Talking too much.

Some people love talking, usually about themselves; they love being the center of attention and never take the time to listen to someone else. Listening is how we learn. Listen more than you talk. Pay attention to the things people say. No one ever learns a thing from listening to themselves. We learn and become better at life by listening to what others have experienced and the things they have to say.

Besides, no one wants to be around someone who never stops talking.

· Negative thoughts.

People who always seem to zero in on the bad miss out on a lot of the good things in life. Instead of looking at a problem and finding a solution, every little obstacle is seen as a tragedy. Solutions are never seen, just problems. When you are always negative, you are doing nothing but sabotaging yourself from accomplishing anything.

Think positive thoughts about yourself, your life, and every situation; try to see solutions and not problems.

· Impulsive behavior.

Acting without thinking about the consequences of your action can get you into real trouble. If you are engaging in promiscuous sex, shoplifting, driving recklessly, etc. your sensation-seeking behavior is going to cause social, financial, and possible legal problems.

Always consider the consequences before you act.

· Low self-esteem.

Having low self-esteem and no confidence shows. If you have no confidence in yourself, how can you expect others to be confident in you? When it comes to romance, men and women say confidence is one of the top three sexiest qualities in a person. When it comes to business, no one is going to put their confidence in you if you do not have it in yourself.

You can build self-esteem by learning new skills and thinking positive thoughts about yourself and your life.

· No set goals.

Everyone successful in life has short- and long-term goals. By not setting any goals for ourselves and then working to achieve them, people end up wasting a lot of time doing nothing. Set goals for yourself, write them down, and work to achieve those goals. This will help keep you from wasting time.

Setting short- and long-term goals for yourself help you to move forward in life; rather than spinning your wheels and going nowhere.

· Following instead of leading.

Followers never seem to have an original idea and usually go along with what everyone else is doing. Being a leader requires good communication skills, the ability to influence and motivate others, and good time management skills.

While not everyone is a natural leader, these skills can be learned.

· Blame everyone else.

Blaming everyone and everything except yourself and your actions when something does not work out only keeps you from improving upon yourself and avoiding the same mistakes. After all, we must learn from history to avoid repeating it, right?

The only way to change your life is to change your bad habits, character flaws, and personality traits that are holding you back. Not everyone is willing to take a long, honest look at themselves. Many opportunities are missed when we do not learn from our mistakes and move forward.

If you find that you have any of these self traits, they may be holding you back. Do not wait for someone or something to come along and change your life; make a plan, and get started today! No more procrastinating. Only you can change your life.
