I find that a great many public haters of religion, Richard Dawkins and his New Atheist followers being a good example, appear to know very little about how believers actually conceive of God. Its like doing the work to find out what people really believe is beneath them. It’s much easier to set up a straw man like the “Old Man in the Sky with a Beard, “ then ridicule that image. I think an exact equivalent would be for religious believers to ridicule the New Atheists' ritual worship of the deified Charles Darwin. Of course they don’t really do that, but if we repeated it often enough, with a sufficiently scoffing tone, people who know nothing about atheism might eventually conclude there must be something to it.
