Read as much poetry as you possibly can. I doubt anyone can become a poet without doing this.
How To Become A Poet
Mike Essig

This is the one truly indespensible step that far too many young poets skip over, in my experience of young poets… When I was getting my feet wet in this biz in my early 20s, I thought the lyrics to Doors and Rolling Stones songs were “great poetry.” Then I discovered e. e. cummings, Wallace Stevens, W B Yeats, William Carlos Williams, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg… If I had stuck to the radio as my measure of greatness, I’d still be ripping off Jim Morrison. Now I steal from the best! Sometimes even from you, Mike Essig!
