midnight awakenings

in the dark
in this nothing, everything
stretched out
edges and corners
unmapped, save for soft bumps and
muffled echoes
a wide expanse
of unknowing
of wailing
of tiredness cupped in my arms
rocked to the only sound in the world.
not a mother’s knowing, but
a bridge’s ache

and slowly the tears less urgent
and closer the whispers of dreams
back into this nothing
this darkness
back to sleep
