Modern web technologies make it so easy to add features and glam to a website. It’s somewhat of a catch a monkey trap (web designers are the monkeys; needless features are the nuts):

So hard to remember that perfection is when you can’t take anything else away, not when there is nothing else you can add.

Don’t undervalue the incredible discipline and self-restraint craigslist has shown in order to avoid the pitfalls so many startups make:

The site commands vast loyalty despite doing very little to actively court its users.

Not exploiting them & offering a service at cost… I would call that doing an incredible amount to court users. I get the sense you judge websites by how many animated SVGs they have.
