The STAR Interview Method is a technique that helps candidates prepare for interview questions that determine whether they will be able to handle specific situations associated with a job.

The STAR method helps you create an easy-to-follow story with a clear conflict and resolution.

Using this method of answering interview questions allows you to provide concrete examples or proof that you possess the experience and skills for the job at hand.

STAR method is particularly helpful in response to competency-focused questions, which typically start out with phrases.

Such as;

· Tell me about a time when…

  • What do you do when…
  • Have you ever…
  • Share an example of…
  • Describe a…

What is STAR Method?

STAR is an acronym that stands for:

Situation: Set the scene and give the necessary details of your example.
Task: Describe what your responsibility was in that situation.
Action: Explain exactly what steps you took to address it.
Result: Share what outcomes your actions achieved.

The concepts in the acronym comprise the following:

Situation:

Think of a situation similar to what the interviewer is asking you about that had a successful outcome.

Set the stage for the story by sharing context around the situation or challenge you faced.

Describe the context within which you performed a job or faced a challenge at work.

Remember to include the who, what, where, when and how. Be as specific as possible.

Task:

Describe the task you were responsible for in that situation.

Perhaps you had to help your group complete a project within a tight deadline, resolve a conflict with a coworker, or hit a sales target.

For example, “As a group leader, it was my role not only to ensure my team met our all deadlines but also to communicate bandwidth to other departments and keep my group motivated.”

Action:

Describe what exactly you did in task. You then describe how you completed the task or endeavored to meet the challenge.

If the action was carried out by a team, then focus on your efforts.

Remember to focus on what you did and highlight traits (qualities) that a hiring manager will find desirable (initiative, teamwork, leadership, dedication, etc.)

Result: Finally, explain the outcomes or results generated by the action taken & contributed to that outcome.

It may be helpful to emphasize what you accomplished, or what you learned

Example of STAR Method:

Example of behavioral question and a S.T.A.R. method interview answer.

“Can you tell me about a time you went above and beyond your expected duties?”

Before we answer this question, let’s pretend the qualities/behaviors the company is looking for are problem solving and initiative and use those to craft our S.T.A.R. interview answer.

Situation: I was a part of a team working on a presentation meant to help us secure a major new client for our company. The weather was bad, and as a result my supervisor got caught in a snowstorm and was unable to make it back in time. It looked like we were going to have to cancel the meeting and potentially lose the client.

Task: I had been looking for ways to take on more responsibility, so I volunteered to finish up the presentation.

Action: I worked with my supervisor via the phone and between the two of us, we were able to go ahead with the scheduled meeting.

Result: As a result of my initiative, we not only landed the client, but I was also recommended for a promotion.
