1. One Lynched, Three Critically Injured by Mob On Suspicions of Cow Theft
One man was lynched and three others were critically injured by a mob in Biswanath district of Assam that suspected them to be cattle lifters, police said on 16 August.
Biswanath Superintendent of Police Diganta Kumar Choudhury told PTI the incident took place early on 15 August.
The SP said as per preliminary inquiry, the four men had allegedly stolen two cows from a person named Sankat Tanti and were fleeing in an auto van which had no number plate.
“After Tanti shouted for help, the villagers intercepted the four and started thrashing the suspected thieves. We have recovered the auto van and the two cows,” Choudhury said.
The dead man was identified as Deben Rajbongshi (35) and the injured as Pujan Ghatowar (40), Phulchand Sahu (25) and Bijoy Nayak (25), he added.
2. NRI Asks for Directions, Gets Beaten to Death in Gurugram
A non-resident Indian died on Wednesday, 15 August, after he was allegedly thrashed by a security guard and a young man over seeking directions in DLF Phase-II in Gurugram, the police said on Thursday, 16 August. Both accused have been arrested on murder charges.
Somou Balaya had returned from the United States with his wife Geeta and their teenage son two months ago.
He had gone to a private school on Wednesday evening in his car when the incident happened.
Somou got into an altercation with security guard 46-year-old Pradeep Singh and 25-year-old local resident Manik Khosla over seeking directions while walking down to a place in Block “P” of DLF Phase-II around 4.30 p.m. The argument turned violent and the two accused started thrashing Somou. He passed out on the road after the beating.
He was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
3. Two Arrested for Killing Official on Land Measuring Duty
Two days after an official of the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) was shot dead in Gurgaon’s Manesar while surveying a piece of land, police have arrested two people for the crime, on 16 August.
According to police, the accused, Abhimanyu alias Mannu and Rameshwar belong to Manesar village. “During questioning, the accused revealed that the HSIIDC, as a part of the acquisition process, had ploughed the piece of land in question, which the accused had sown. This angered the two, and they decided to take revenge,” said Subhash Boken, PRO of Gurgaon police.
The disputed land in question is part of the 400-acre land in Manesar which, as per Supreme Court orders, was supposed to be acquired by HSIIDC after it was found that the government, under former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, had illegally given it to developers between 2004 and 2007.
4. Andhra Forest Officer Assaulted for Interrupting Drinking Session, 6 Booked
Six men were booked by the Andhra Pradesh police on Wednesday, 15 August, after they were caught on camera assaulting a forest officer on Tuesday at Sunnipenta in the Nallamalla Tiger Reserve.
The accused were angry because the forest officer, Jyothi Swaroop, stopped them as they were drinking alcohol in the forest area and creating a ruckus near the road.
The six people were said to be on their way to Srisailam from Hyderabad, reportedly to have a darshan of the presiding deity at the town’s Mallikarjuna Temple.
A video shows the accused repeatedly slapping the forest officer, demanding that he touch their feet because he interrupted them. As he was being thrashed, the forest officer managed to escape and run for shelter, before approaching the police and filing a formal complaint later.
5. West Bengal Youth Shot in Leg, Bombs Hurled; FIR Lodged
A youth was shot in the leg and crude bombs were hurled on a street in Kolkata’s Narkeldanga area on Monday, 13 August. At least two bystanders also sustained injuries from the splinters.
An FIR under IPC section 307 (attempt to murder) has been registered at Narkeldanga police station.
Police said they received contrary reports about what happened, adding the victim had also been changing his statements.
Some local residents said three bike-borne men had reached the spot and hurled crude bombs, following which people began to flee. As a result of the explosion, the area had been enveloped in a plume of black smoke. When the smoke cleared, bystanders found the youth lying on the road with gunshot wound on his leg.
“Prima facie, it seems like a case of misfiring. The victim is also changing his statements. We are probing the case,” said Joint CP (Crime) Praveen Tripathy.
8. Seven Held for Murder in Chennai
Chennai police on Thursday, 16 August, arrested seven persons who stabbed a 24-year-old youth in full public glare on Wednesday.
Adityan, 24, of TV Nagar in Chennai’s Thirumangalam, was supplying water cans to residents of his area. On Wednesday morning, when he was in the 3rd Avenue of Anna Nagar near Aminjikarai police station, a gang of seven waylaid him and attacked him with iron rods before stabbing him to death. The gang fled the spot.
Police suspected Sandeepkumar, 25, of NSK Nagar in Arumbakkam, to be behind the murder and nabbed him. A special team led by Anna Nagar Inspector M. Saravanan was formed to trace the other accused. The team apprehended six more persons involved in the crime within 24-hours.
The investigation revealed that the deceased Adityan and his associates had beaten up Sandeepkumar and humiliated him in public. Adityan openly swore that he would not spare Sandeepkumar and his brother Rajkumar and threatened to kill them, the police said.
