Drupal 10 is all set to launch in December 2022 and it will be a smooth transition from Drupal 9 for any well-built and maintained site. Drupal 8 will reach its end of life in November 2021 and Drupal 7 will be as soon as November 2023. With a few significant differences that will help site managers and developers, Drupal 10 will essentially be the same as the most recent minor version of Drupal 9.
Drupal 10 is coming out with many cool features some of them even include updates to Drupal Defaults.

Automatic Updates and Project Browser

Two significant forthcoming features for Drupal 10 that are being developed as contributed modules are Automatic Updates and Project Browser. This is one of the most awaited features in Drupal 10. Updating Drupal sites and maintaining them has always been a hassle for developers. With Automatic updates, it can detect and report a problem at every stage of the update process.

Project Browser is added as a contributed module to Drupal 10 this will help with browsing the modules and getting installation instructions without leaving the site.

Updated Themes

Another addition to Drupal 10 is an updated look and feel which is more modern and clean. Theme Seven will be replaced by Claro which is described as “A clean, accessible and powerful Drupal administration theme.” When setting up a new Drupal Site we are accustomed to Bartik for the front end this is being replaced by Olivero.

Drupal 10 is going to be easier to use for Site administrators and content creators. With updated themes on the Backend and Front End both the latest version of Drupal has the look and feel of a modern CMS.

jQuery UI

Modern Javascript components will replace the use of jQuery. Drupal 10 onwards Internet explorer 11 will not be supported. Also using vanilla javascript instead of jQuery will make the core more secure and easy to maintain.

CK Editor 5

CK Editor 5 will be the default text editor in Drupal 10 core. New Ck Editor will provide content creators with better authoring experience and more modern editing. There is also an improvement to the paste-from-document functionality. The option to delete superfluous markup that results from pasting from Word or Google Docs is promoted in the new version of CK Editor.

Decoupled Menus

Decoupled Menus is coming as contributed module in Drupal 10 but soon will be part of the core. It enables Javascript Front End to consume configurable menus managed in Drupal. This is Drupal’s way to move closer to being headless cms. Content creators can change the menus in Drupal UI and this will reflect in the javascript front end.

Conclusion

If you are using Drupal 9 use the upgrade status module to get an estimate of the work needed. The module will provide the required information about which custom code needs update and which is deprecated.
