Go GREEN there is no other ‘PLANET’ for living

GANDHIJI said that:::

“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need but not his greed”

“Sustainability” is much more than a recent buzzword and one of the biggest issues faced by the mankind at present..Put simply, sustainable development is the act of meeting the needs of today’s generation without negatively affecting the needs of any future generations. In practical terms, it not only makes sense to care about future generations, but it is also the right thing to do. After all, most of us have children and grandchildren, so it is quite natural to care about their futures as well as our own.

There are now 6 billion people living on the earth. By 2050 there will be estimated 9 billion. If we don’t live in more sustainable way then 9 billion people can’t live on the earth. Increasing population along with activities has raised several questions on the sustainability of natural resources on our planet. No part of the Earth is now untouched by the effect of human activities or pollution.

In addition to this, urbanization, industrialization and modern agricultural practices have polluted the water resources, air and soil all around the globe. The natural resources are thus not only being over-exploited but also becoming contaminated with toxic chemicals making it difficult for the survival of future generations

The ever increasing emission of green house gases is showing far reaching impact on the blue planet and according to estimates of various agencies such as United States Development Authority (USDA) and Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) this will result in rise in temperature by 02 °C by 2050.

Extinction of species of both plants and animals at present is hundreds of times higher than the natural rate in the past and as the situation is turning out it can be thousands of times higher in near future. As an example it is estimated that the rate at which coral reefs are depleting, they will be completely wiped out in very near future and with them several other species will also become extinct.

Many nations throughout the world have come together and developed plans and goals for our sustainable development efforts.

Use of latest technologies and tools … Biotechnological approaches and green technologies are providing the solutions to these problems. Scientists are in process of developing green fuels and management of pollutants, organic wastes and biodegradation of contaminated sites is being achieved by the help of biotechnological tools.

Ways to Become More Environmentally Friendly

You don’t have to jump in by changing everything, start small to make the changes more sustainable and a part of your normal life.

A good way would be to start with conserving water, driving less and walking more, consuming less energy, buying recycled products, eating locally grown vegetables, joining environmental groups to combat air pollution, creating less waste, planting more trees and many more.

Here are some ways you can begin to become more environmentally friendly…

REDUCE, REUSE, AND RECYCLE

This mantra has been around for decades, but its longevity is simply proof of its truth.

Reduce simply means reducing what is produced and what is consumed. Reuse items for a different purpose instead of sending them to landfills. To recycle something means that it will be transformed again into a raw material that can be shaped into a new item.

GROW YOUR OWN FOOD BY COMPOSTING

Growing your own food can also help you feel more interconnected with the environment and encourage you to improve sustainability in other ways: Starting your own compost pile (a great way to reduce, reuse, and recycle!), and purchasing less food that has to be trucked from distant locations (a wise purchasing decision).

How you opt to begin your own personal journey to a more sustainable world is up to you, and begins in your own home.

CHANGE YOUR TRAVEL HABITS

Driving and flying are two areas where you can make a real impact with environmentally friendly practices. Choose fuel efficient travel options, travel less and try to pick more direct routes to save on fuel. If your office is near your home, try to ride a bicycle instead of a car.

EDUCATE OTHERS

Educating others about the importance of living an environmentally friendly life. The more people share an awareness of the importance of the environment, the more we can do together to conserve it.

Some other ecofriendly ways are:::

SUSTAINABLE USE OF FERTILIZERS, PESTICIDES, AND HERBICIDES

BUY LOCALLY GROWN PRODUCTS

BECOME MORE AWARE OF RESOURCES

PRACTICE CONSERVATION

CONSERVE WATER

BUY RECYCLED PRODUCTS

JOIN ENVIRONMNET GROUPS

Myself as a member in JANA VIGNANA VEDIKA (Andhra Pradesh, India), A NATIONAL AWARD WINNER, AN NCSTC NETWORK MEMBER AND AN AIPSN AFFILIATE which was founded on February 28th,1988, the National Science Day with the main objective to popularize science and to promote scientific temper among people organizing several kinds of programmes to bring in awareness of environmental upkeep, ecological balance, sustainable development, etc., among people and policy makers. It was a good activity of Jvv in popularizing the harmful effects of aerated soft drinks in the light of the reports of the Centre for Science and Environment(CSE) and the Joint Parliament Committee(JPC) besides other technical findings. JVV promotes sustainable, eco-friendly, need-based agricultural, industrial, economic and energy policies. It sensitizes people aganist the ruthless consumption of natural resources. It ridicules the detrimental use of chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, drugs and other hazardous materials. It stands aganist projects intended for profits of multinationals and the rich at the cost of people’s misery and inconvenience. It encourages industrialization and technological automation within the framework of people’s welfare and ecological balance only. so, we can do our best for environmentally friendly by the way of joining environmental groups.

Targeting short term gains, humans have destroyed the natural systems with great pace.We need to remember that…

We only have one planet to share with people who will be here in the years to come. It is sometimes difficult for us to think about what the planet will look like decades and centuries after we are gone, but considering most of us will have relatives on the planet, it is something we should think about on a regular basis.

It is our most important responsibility to leave the planet as a self sustainable system providing equal opportunities of survival not only to our future generations but also to all other species co-habiting with us.
