A day in the life of a content writer

Good (real-life) stories begin with booze but good content stories begin with coffee.

We work around 45 hours a week; researching, thinking, writing and then writing some more. It is a bumpy ride. It gets bumpier when you have to meet daily targets like writing 2.5k words a day. Sigh.

Here is a sample mail:

Guest post, Keyword: Payroll outsourcing companies, Word count: 600

Whenever I receive a mail like this, for a few minutes I go into a brain freeze mode. You must be thinking how a single line mail can throw me into a bad space, I will try to explain you why. As a creative writer, it is the right part of your brain that works, as a technical writer, it is the left part. Since a content writer can get any kind of work, our brain has to make a lot of switches.

Almost every person on this planet cribs about their work, I do too. Sometimes I sit and think about doing great things but writing gives me a reality check. Even if I become a great writer someday, there is a long road ahead. This is just the beginning. Even if I do some other job, good writing is still miles away from here.

There are days when I want to outsource my work and not do it myself. I recently had a conversation with a writer friend which went like this:

Me: Hey! I will pay you, please write one article for me.

Friend: Sure, give me the money. But do not expect an article.

Writers are in need of money all the time. Work, not so much.

I love my weekends, I love the time spent with my boyfriend. My job makes me value my relationships a lot more than I did before. Perhaps that’s the most valuable thing about being a content writer. Writing, not so much.
