What is Anger Management?

Anger management refers to the process of learning how to effectively control and regulate feelings of anger. It is considered as a psycho-therapuetic program for anger prevention. It basically aims to control and manage feelings of anger in a healthy way. It involves many techniques and strategies to lessen the effects of anger. Anger is considered to be a normal reaction, emotion or feeling however one can manage to control it better.

Anger management is an important skill to have as it can significantly improve one’s well being and can leave positive effects on relationships with family, friends or with coworkers. It requires patience and practice and in time individuals can learn how to effectively manage their anger and the positive effects that comes with it.

Negative effects of anger include:

  • Emotional distress: can affect one’s personal growth, happiness and overall well being.
  • Difficulties in relationships.
  • Mental health issues: anxiety, depression or insomnia.
  • Physical health issues: uncontrolled anger may result in high blood pressure, heart disease, headaches or chronic pain.
  • Impaired decision making abilities.
  • Occupational problems: anger can impact poor job performance and conflicts with co-workers.
  • legal issues: violent behaviour can result in facing legal consequences, having long lasting impacts on personal life.

These effects shows why it is important to manage anger.

Anger Management Techniques Include:

  • Deep breathing exercises.
  • Being self aware — noticing signs and symptoms, being aware of personal triggers that signal escalating anger.
  • Engaging in physical activity can help release tension and improve your mood. For example going for a walk.
  • Seeking professional help: cognitive behavioural interventions or anger managing therapy are effective in managing anger issues.
  • Distancing yourself: stepping away from the situation, giving yourself time to relax and think clearly about the situation.
  • Developing problem solving skills can resolve conflicts.
  • Building empathy and understanding.
  • Practising forgiveness.
  • Evaluating potential consequences of anger.
