On Thursday, Oct. 26, 2023, Interserv held its first public trunk or treat in Southside St. Joseph. Interserv is a family support center in South Side St. Joseph. Interserv has been helping families find food, assistance, and housing for over 100 years.

Brett King, who has been with Interserv for 12 years but has been the executive director of the foundation for four, explained a bit more about the trunk or treat.

“This is kind of a new thing for us,” said King. “Normally we kind of just host our own youth group as far as Halloween goes and a trick or treat in our offices but this time we thought we would just get out and try to let the community come out. See about Interserve so we decided to do a little trunk or treat going on tonight. And we’ve got 12 I think cars”

Interserv started setting up their trunk or treat around roughly 4:30 on Thursday with the schedule to start at 5:30 and at about 5:20 is when children started lining up and waiting for their very own sweet treats.

This trunk-or-treat idea was created through Interserv’s Sunshine Committee, an employee committee at Interserv.

“It was a good staff idea or we have a committee of employees, our sunshine committee,” King said. “Kind of got together and said that we needed to do something as a staff to try to get people involved. And you can see most of our staff people got their trucks together and we’re getting ready to get trick or treated”

Trish Edwards, another employee at Interserv, has been with the company since 2009. Edwards told us more about her excitement about Halloween and the trunk or treat.

“I Love it. I love trunk-or-treating,” Edwards said. “I love everything Halloween so when I saw they posted this I was like sign me up for a trunk”

Edwards also went a bit further into her expectations of results.

“I think we’re gonna have a good turnout,” Edwards said. “Interserv is very well established in the community and you know we have services for everyone so everyone is welcome.”

Interserv had a very good turnout of events on Thursday. King and Edwards both said they see this going forward both gave a hopeful yes. Interserv trunks or treats may very well become a yearly tradition.
