A Letter to Sir on Teachers’ Day
Respected Sir,
They said Bollywood movies are good. They advocated the need for me to be an engineer or doctor. They propagated the existence of the non-existential gods. They were wrong, but unfortunately, there wasn’t somebody who could explain their fallacy to me.
This is how the society is. This is what happens to a kid who is trapped in this society. I know this because I too had been trapped. I too had adhered to society’s norms without conscious thought.
Instead of talking about how much I enjoy your classes (which I obviously do), I will be talking about the ways the school has changed me over the course of years. And since the school is your brainchild, I will have the scope to express my gratitude for you.
This school has changed the way I think and view the world. We were taught to question the so called “societal norms.” We learnt about the ulterior motives that the elite have when they try to preserve these norms. Above all, we learnt to value pragmatism and free-thinking.
This school has changed me in many different ways. I remember before coming to this school, I had been a kid enamored by cartoons. But ever since I came to this school, the prospect of watching TV sounds really alien and unfamiliar.
It was this school that fostered the love for reading in me. This school gave so many good books. At times, those books used to be too difficult for me and I used to complain that the books are not good. But reading those books a second time proved just how good they were. I really regret not reading some of those books properly in the past.
I never knew that I was capable of writing decent stories or letters. This school encouraged us to write. I was particularly motivated to write more after winning in this year’s story writing contest. My view of maths also changed. I came to view maths as the art of manipulating numbers, rather than just be fazed by the blur of symbols.
I must also talk about the amazing friends that I have in the school. They too have been shaped by the school. They too share the same taste as me. And that’s what makes it so enjoyable to interact with them or have a conversation with them.
This school has given me so much more that it can’t be summarized in one short letter. But what I can say with certainty is that the best years of my life are going to be my school years.
I will say to you what I didn’t have a chance to say all these years: thank you. Thank you for creating such a wonderful place and making school life so enjoyable. Thank you for creating this oasis in a small place like Suri. Thank you for forgiving the small mistakes I made and the crimes I committed. Thank you for making me who I am today.
In gratitude,
A student
(Since we are encouraged to write something or give something that we have created to the teachers, on Teachers’ Day, I am writing this letter to Sir who happens to be the best teacher I have ever come across.)
