I left my full time job to open a company — What I learned in this personal experience.

In the summer of 2022, my life seemed to be going smoothly. I was living and working in Milan, the city of opportunities, as an employee of a financial agency. I had a stable career and a promising future ahead of me. However, that hot summer would mark the beginning of an unexpected transformation, a life lesson I will never forget.
The Idea That Changed Everything
It all began when I returned to Sicily for my summer vacation. As every year, I eagerly anticipated going back home, surrounded by the warmth of family and the scent of the sea. But this time, upon my arrival, I found my father and some friends, all seasoned professionals, engaged in an animated discussion. They invited me to join them and, with contagious enthusiasm, they presented me with an ambitious idea: to found an engineering company specializing in industrial photovoltaic systems, construction, and public contracts.
Having a degree in urban planning, this proposal seemed tailor-made for me. It was my chance to make the leap and dedicate myself to work I truly felt passionate about. The excitement of the moment clouded my judgment, and without a second thought, I decided to leave my secure job in Milan to pursue this new entrepreneurial dream.
The Initial Struggles
The company officially launched in December 2022, but from the very beginning, we encountered several difficulties. The initial promises shattered against the harsh reality of the market and insufficiently deepened skills and one of those who was supposed to be a partner, with already a technical office and a portfolio of works that could be an important basis for a company in its infancy, had second thoughts and abandoned the idea of founding the company with us. Of the many projects we had planned, we managed to advance only one. The path proved to be more winding and full of obstacles than I had ever imagined.
Unfinished photovoltaic project on 20 hectares of land;
Renovation of a retirement home not started;
Of two million euros of condominium renovation work, we have only started one job.
The Reasons for Failure
As the months went by, the reasons for our struggles became increasingly clear:
1. Lack of Dedication
All the partners had primary jobs and could not actively dedicate themselves to the new company. This lack of full-time commitment severely hindered our progress and ability to manage the business effectively.
2. Insufficient Technical Expertise
Only one other partner and I had the technical skills necessary for running an engineering company. This skill gap left us stretched thin and unable to handle the complex demands of our projects.
3. Internal Friction
There were frictions between some of the partners. These interpersonal conflicts created an unhealthy working environment and further impeded our progress.
4. Absence of a Business and Development Plan
We did not have a solid business and development plan. This lack of strategic planning left us without clear goals and directions, causing disorganization and inefficiency.
The Lessons Learned
This experience taught me three fundamental lessons, which I want to share with anyone considering a similar path:
1. Never Start a Business with People You Don’t Know Professionally
Knowing someone personally is not enough to guarantee a successful working relationship. Professional dynamics are different and require trust built on concrete and shared experiences. Initial enthusiasm is not enough: it is necessary to carefully assess the skills and reliability of your partners.
This is also the reason why venture capitalists, when evaluating an early stage startup, give much more value to the team than to the business idea.
The business ideas can change, the strongest team stay.
2. Never Leave a Job Without Having Something Certain
The euphoria of change can lead to rash decisions. Leaving a secure job without having a solid and concrete foundation for the future is risky. It is essential to conduct a realistic analysis of the prospects and have a backup plan.
3. People Tend to Overestimate Their Capabilities
Enthusiasm can lead to overestimating your abilities and those of others. It is important to maintain a critical and realistic approach, objectively assessing the skills at hand. Trust is essential, but it must be accompanied by a clear awareness of one’s limits.
Looking to the Future with New Awareness
Despite the difficulties, this experience has greatly enriched me. I have learned to better manage expectations, to more carefully evaluate opportunities, and to build more solid foundations for the future. Returning to Sicily was a bold step, perhaps a rash one, but I do not regret it. Every lesson learned is worth more than any immediate success.

Nell’estate del 2022, la mia vita sembrava andare a gonfie vele. Vivevo e lavoravo a Milano, la città delle opportunità, come dipendente di un’agenzia finanziaria. Avevo una carriera stabile e un futuro promettente davanti a me. Tuttavia, quella calda estate si sarebbe rivelata l’inizio di una trasformazione inaspettata, una lezione di vita che non dimenticherò mai.
L’Idea che Cambia Tutto
Tutto iniziò quando rientrai in Sicilia per le vacanze estive. Come ogni anno, attendevo con ansia il ritorno a casa, tra il calore familiare e il profumo del mare. Ma quella volta, al mio arrivo, trovai mio padre e alcuni amici, tutti professionisti di lunga data, intenti a discutere animatamente. Mi invitarono a unirmi a loro e, con entusiasmo contagioso, mi illustrarono un’idea ambiziosa: fondare una società di ingegneria specializzata in impianti fotovoltaici industriali, costruzioni e appalti pubblici.
Essendo laureato in urbanistica, quella proposta sembrava fatta su misura per me. Era la mia occasione per fare il salto e dedicarmi a un lavoro che sentivo davvero mio. L’eccitazione del momento offuscò il mio giudizio e, senza pensarci due volte, decisi di lasciare il mio posto sicuro a Milano per inseguire questo nuovo sogno imprenditoriale.
Le Prime Difficoltà
La società nacque ufficialmente nel dicembre del 2022, ma già dai primi passi ci scontrammo con diverse difficoltà. Le promesse iniziali si infransero contro la dura realtà del mercato e delle competenze non sufficientemente approfondite. Dei molti progetti che avevamo pianificato, riuscimmo a portarne avanti solo uno. La strada si rivelò più tortuosa e irta di ostacoli di quanto avessi mai immaginato.
Le Ragioni Delle Difficoltà
Con il passare dei mesi, le ragioni delle nostre lotte sono diventate sempre più chiare:
1. Mancanza di dedizione
Tutti i soci avevano lavori primari e non potevano dedicarsi attivamente alla nuova società. Questa mancanza di impegno a tempo pieno ha ostacolato gravemente i nostri progressi e la capacità di gestire l’attività in modo efficace.
2. Competenza tecnica insufficiente
Soltanto io e un altro socio possedevamo le competenze tecniche necessarie per gestire una società di ingegneria. Questo divario di competenze ci ha lasciato a corto di risorse e incapaci di gestire le complesse richieste dei nostri progetti.
3. Attrito interno
Ci sono stati attriti tra alcuni partner. Questi conflitti interpersonali hanno creato un ambiente di lavoro malsano e hanno ulteriormente ostacolato il nostro progresso.
4. Assenza di un Piano Industriale e di Sviluppo
Non avevamo un piano aziendale e di sviluppo solido. Questa mancanza di pianificazione strategica ci ha lasciato senza obiettivi e indicazioni chiare, causando disorganizzazione e inefficienza.
Le Lezioni Imparate
Questa esperienza mi ha insegnato tre lezioni fondamentali, che voglio condividere con chiunque stia pensando di intraprendere un percorso simile:
1. Mai fare società con chi non conosci lavorativamente parlando
Conoscere una persona a livello personale non è sufficiente per garantire una collaborazione lavorativa di successo. Le dinamiche professionali sono diverse e richiedono una fiducia costruita sulla base di esperienze concrete e condivise. L’entusiasmo iniziale non basta: è necessario valutare con attenzione le competenze e l’affidabilità dei propri soci.
2. Mai lasciare un posto di lavoro se non hai nulla di certo
L’euforia del cambiamento può portare a decisioni avventate. Abbandonare un posto di lavoro sicuro senza avere una base solida e concreta per il futuro è rischioso. È fondamentale fare un’analisi realistica delle prospettive e avere un piano di riserva.
3. Le persone tendono a sovrastimare le proprie capacità
L’entusiasmo può indurre a sopravvalutare le proprie abilità e quelle degli altri. È importante mantenere un approccio critico e realistico, valutando in modo oggettivo le competenze a disposizione. La fiducia è essenziale, ma deve essere accompagnata da una chiara consapevolezza dei propri limiti.
Guardare al Futuro con Nuova Consapevolezza
Nonostante le difficoltà, questa esperienza mi ha arricchito enormemente. Ho imparato a gestire meglio le aspettative, a valutare con più attenzione le opportunità e a costruire basi più solide per il futuro. Tornare in Sicilia è stato un passo coraggioso, forse avventato, ma non lo rimpiango. Ogni lezione imparata vale più di qualsiasi successo immediato.
