1. Format/Size/Perspectives

First of all think about the end result you want to achieve, imagine the shot you want and decide if its going to be a landscape/horizontal or a portrait/vertical picture. So the question is, what do i want to show/ transfer to my audience, what is the mood & inspiration ?

I always imagine the end result, so i use 16:9 when i planned to post the picture just in my social media stories, 4:3 is for the actual posts. It‘s really frustrating to crop off parts of your perfectly finished picture.

Reminder: keep it simple- try to be minimalistic.

A few tips for the beginning:

  • Check your Camera Settings — make sure everything is allowed for the perfect shot! (RAW ON, Grid ON, View Outside the Frame OFF)
  • use RAW (if your Phone can shoot RAW= uncompressed images) for more editing possibilities and better quality
  • keep in mind that RAW creates large images = affects your storage
  • activate Live Mode if you want to create long exposure shots or a bouncy boomerang effect — you can change that anytime afterwards
  • Edit Photos in your Camera Roll first, so you won´t lose quality at the beginning — Part 2 will be about Editing (Apps) and hacks.
  • buy a small Tripod for your Phone and use the 3sec/10sec Timer to create amazing portraits of yourself or to create low exposure in the night/ in low light situations when holding your phone steady gets difficult — the possibilities are endless! ;)

2. The holy Lens

first of all, before taking pictures with your Phone – clean your lens gently with your shirt or even better with a microfiber cloth— even small pieces of dust can affect your results!

Always use the back camera of your Phone, for a better quality, you‘ll see the difference when editing. Leave the front cam for the selfies.

3. Think outside the box

Always try different angles, play with leading lines, mirrors, shadows and different light situations. — everything for the aesthetics!

The Grid Function allows you to apply the 2:3 Rule aka. Golden Ratio/Rule of Thirds, place your main object in this area.

Rule of Thirds (Image by Author)

Rule of Thirds is a composition guideline that places your subject in the left or right third of an image, leaving the other two thirds open.

Don‘t be afraid to lay down or stand on a chair to get better perspectives.

The Internet is overloaded with pictures- we want to see something extraordinary!

4. The power of 0,5x

Flip your phone, turn on the 0,5x Lens & get closer to your subject/model and create this fish eye effect without a filter!

Pro Tipp: Use your flash to make the photo even more sharpen and cleaner.

5. Portrait Mode – not just for people!

Use Portrait Mode to achieve a nice bokeh/background blur, it gives the shot more depth and looks more professional!

Try Portrait Mode on your next food or drink shot in a restaurant — you won´t regret it!

Here I used the setting ´natural light´

If using Portrait Mode you can always change the focal length afterwards, allowing you to play with the depth.
