That’s an interesting point Mike. We help people find relevant, diverse content through recommendations based on the content they’re exploring, so to the extent that they’re looking for local content, we’ll help them find more. We can’t really stop users choosing not to pay attention to local content/issues though, or stop content providers themselves deprioritising it. Unfortunately money talks, and because of the bigger potential audience for global content I expect that 9/10 times it’s more lucrative. Local press used to be able to make good money from local classifieds etc., which subsidised the editorial product, but not any more. I’m not sure how we fill that gap I’m afraid.
