Water

The most essential component for every living organism. It is estimated that Human body contains about 65% of water while some plants possess about 95% water. It is the vital commodity for the survival of all life forms. Chemically, water is an universal solvent which is of great importance. This essential component –the water is unevenly distributed over the earth’s surface.

  1. It is a colorless & tasteless liquid.

2.In comparison to other liquids, water has a higher specific heat, thermal conductivity, surface tension, dipole moment, dielectric constant etc,.

3.Due to formation of hydrogen bonding with polar molecules, even covalent compounds like alcohol and carbohydrates also dissolve in water.

4. It is an excellent solvent for transportation of ions and molecules required for plant and animal metabolism.

5. The high heat of vaporization and heat capacity are responsible for moderation of the climate and body temperature of living beings.

Structure of water from different perspective

Structure Of Water

In gas phase water is a bent molecule with a bond angle 104.5 degree where the O-H bond length is 95.7pm. Water is a highly polar molecule. In liquid phase the water molecules are associated together by hydrogen bonds.

Note: Density of ice is lesser than that of water hence ice floats on water.
