If We Hadn’t Bought Our House When We Did, We Would be Struggling Now
I don’t see how average people can afford to live these days
I am Gen X, and my first apartment I had with a roommate was $400, and we each paid half. It included utilities and electric. It was easily affordable for two single moms with babies to afford rent, food, and everything else we needed. We both had jobs, worked different shifts, and babysat for each other.
Life was pretty easy.
These days, it’s hard to afford to live even with roommates, especially if you only get paid minimum wage.
In more recent years, my partner and our three kids rented a house for $700 per month. That was a little low at the time for our area eight or nine years ago, but still normal. We paid just the electric, the rest of the utilities were included.
It wasn’t that long ago. I was able to be a stay-at-home mom, and we could live comfortably on one income.
If we had to do the same thing now, it would be impossible. The cheapest rent around here is in the $1500 range, and the average is over $2000 per month. And it’s rare to find places that include utilities.
