Values, Morals and Ethics basically areforms of rules which in some form or another make a living being can live in a society. These rules some are explicit and some are not so thus a person must be able to learn these rules as we are growing up. This is essential for a peson to be part of the society.
So, who suppose to teach those values, morals and ethics or Rules?
During formative years, teachers and parents will play that roles. Here, the students will be told what is right and what is wrong. In fact the earlier the child being exposed to the values and morals expected of them, the easier will be for the child to except the norm of the society.
However, it is important to remember that a human need to understand the reason why there is such a rule and this need to be explained properly to the child. If the rules are being enforced without explaination then the child will rebel will not except the values that being taught. This is a very important step in learning values and morals.
As the child goes into early adulthood then they will have certain value already instilled in them. At this stage even there is formal lessons about values and morals (as happening in Malaysia), they will not bother. During this time it is important for them to have a role model.
This is where the role of Professor comes in. They not only taught the knowledge but will also be the role model for this young adults.
The Professor must taught them the knowledge, however the Professor will also need to remind the student that knowledge they have is also power and not to be abused. With power comes great responsibility.
At all stages of learning it is important for a student to always have a teacher close by. The concept of instilling values do not happens if the students study via reading on-line materials, doing on-line exercise or remote learning.
This is why universities need to be around, as within the university is Professors who not only giving knowledge to the student but also giving the soul to the students, thus they will be valuable to the society around them.
