Sehat’s Home Vaccination Program

Vaccinations, however painful, inconvenient, and annoying we may find them to be, constitute a vital part of our lives. From when we are young to when we reach the apex of our lives to when we can no longer walk with ease, we are constantly reminded of diseases for which we need to prepare our immune systems. Influenza, typhoid, and pneumonia are just a few of these diseases.

The story of the first vaccine stems from Louis Pasteur’s innate curiosity in combating the smallpox vaccine (Variola). Smallpox, in the 19th century, had a high mortality rate in Europe. Though Louis is heavily credited with perfecting inoculation and vaccination as we know it, it was actually Edward Jenner who coined the term ‘vaccine’ by discovering the cowpox vaccine (Vaccinia), which shared immense commonality with the smallpox vaccine. Though initially the smallpox vaccine was used to prevent the disease among individuals, the material of the vaccine eventually was replaced with Vaccinia — hence the term ‘vaccine’. Smallpox now is almost completely eradicated, as vaccinations since the early 20th disease have reduced prevalence by 99%

Enter 2015. This is an age where technology, the internet, and health-conscious lifestyles have dominated the mindset of every individual on the planet. In Pakistan, an online pharmacy by the name of sehat.com.pk has emerged to offer home vaccinations to the public, in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi. Disruption? Probably one of the best examples of it. The following are the issues with getting vaccinated at the clinic:

  • Taking the time out to schedule a vaccination with a doctor
  • Transporting yourself to the clinic after a hectic day at work
  • Waiting for hours on end in queue for you turn
  • Paying unreasonable fees for getting an injection
  • Lack of documentation for obtaining consent for getting a vaccination

That’s why in April 2015, Sehat launched their Home Vaccination Portal. Once an order is placed, a trained nurse will arrive at your doorstep to inoculate you for any of the following diseases.

Once the trained nurse arrives, a consent form with the following information is presented to the customer to be filled out:

  • I further authorize Apothecare (Pvt) Ltd to share my information to its principals, and to third parties whenever necessary for the accomplishment of the goals of the Program and to ensure my safety as a patient
  • I understand that I may be contacted to provide additional information and/or documents to ensure a better understanding of my profile as a patient as may be necessary to determine my fitness to be vaccinated
  • I understand that as with all vaccines, this vaccine may have some side effects, and while I need to repel such side effects, I would not hold Apothecare (Pvt) Ltd or its principal responsible in case any side effect/safety issue occurs
  • I have read, or have had read to me, in language understandable to me, the above information. The content and meaning this information has been fully explained to me.
  • I have provided the prescription against which I am being administered the medication

This time, Sehat’s Marketing Executive, Bilal Mumtaz, decided to try out the Vaccination service by scheduling a flu shot at his office. The injection in question was Vaxigrip, manufactured by Sanofi-Pasteur. The following was the steps taken for the procedure:

  1. Vaccinator arrives at customer’s doorstep
  2. Vaccinator takes necessary precautions before vaccination (wears gloves, mask, and cap)
  3. Customer signs Patient Certificate and assumes responsibility for the outcome of the vaccination
  4. Customer is seated
  5. Customer’s deltoid (upper arm) muscle is exposed for vaccination
  6. Vaccinator takes syringe out of its packaging
  7. Vaccinator firstly applies antiseptic on deltoid muscle to avoid collection of germs
  8. Vaccinator injects the customer with the vaccine
  9. A bandage is applied on the area to prevent the spread of germs from the atmosphere
  10. Vaccinator advises customer to take Paracetamol if he feels uneasy or experiences an increase in body temperature
