Böitaari Revisits Her Origins with REBECA: Años Después
On May 15th, artist and producer Böitaari released REBECA: Años Después, a reinterpretation of the two songs that made up her first musical project. Originally recorded in 2009 and released physically in 2012 through the Asociación Socio-Cultural Basakato Yeiyeba, this new version arrives under her independent label Bilëbbó Fusión, founded in 2024.
The EP offers a creative, technical, and aesthetic revision of two pieces composed by Bubi singer-songwriter Mastho Ribocho, a key figure in Böitaari’s early career and her mentor in both Bubi vocal tradition and guitar technique. In this new phase, Böitaari takes full control as producer, arranger, and lead performer, shaping the songs through her own artistic lens.
The first track, Ohoéa – Katyá por Bulerías, blends the ternary rhythm of katyá—a ceremonial Bubi dance—with the emotional depth of flamenco. Traditional Bubi chanting intertwines with Spanish guitar arpeggios and bulería handclaps, creating a fusion that feels both fluid and modern. The track has drawn particular attention for its distinctive cultural and sonic identity.
The second track, Basakato Yeiyeba – Merengue Soukous, reimagines a community tribute song with vibrant Afro-Caribbean influences, merging the spirit of traditional merengue with the drive of soukous, all while preserving its celebratory essence.
REBECA: Años Después is not a reissue, but a creative act of artistic autonomy—reframing a starting point through the lens of growth, cultural exploration, and independent production.
The project is now available on all major digital platforms:
