I’ve been an early riser my whole life. Growing up on a farm, I hated it. I couldn’t wait to get a job that didn’t require getting up so early. I got a job as a radio disc jockey. Evenings. PERFECT! Except I was reasonably good and got promoted to the morning drive slot (best $). Now I was getting up earlier than on the farm.
I eventually went back to university. Found I could study better in the morning than in the evening, so I’d get up early before going to school to hit the books.
Then, with a business degree in hand, got into a career in investment management. Living in the Mountain Time Zone, I had to get up early to be ready for the market opening.
Here I am today, almost 54. Retired (for now). Taking a year to write. And guess what? I get up at 5:30 everyday, and maintain a morning routine much like you. I don’t have to since I don’t have a job to do, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s a beautiful time of day. Serene. Peaceful. A great time to focus on your priorities.
I think your morning routine is great. Keep it up. You’ll never regret. One minor suggestion: consider listening to audio books while you walk your dog. I do and it’s one more way to get more personal development in our day. Also, maybe try to shoehorn 10–15 minutes of meditation just before you hit the shower after your workout. Works for me.
