In his free time, Bill Oliver enjoys diving and is a PADI-certified scuba diver. Over the years, he has dived in numerous spots on the Atlantic Coast, including Florida.
One of the best dive spots in the United States, Florida has hundreds of diving spots from which to choose, and many individuals struggle to find the perfect place to explore. Below are just a few of the Sunshine State’s top diving destinations:
- Islamorada: Perfect for beginners, Islamorada is located in the Florida Keys. In addition to featuring reefs that are only 10 to 15 feet deep, Islamorada also houses a 287-foot freighter called the Eagle that sunk in the area and is a great attraction to explore.
- Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary: Complete with 35-foot-tall rock ledges and over five square miles of coral reef, Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary has plenty of sights to enjoy. Located in Bahia Honda State Park, it also features plenty of marine life.
- Half Moon Preserve: Novice divers flock to this Biscayne National Park wreck thanks to its historic and unique nature. Resting in the shallows, the wreck was the top racing yacht during its day and was the first German ship captured by the British in 1908.
- Molasses Reef: A great shallow dive, Molasses Reef on Key Largo is a great destination for divers who want to see live coral, but lack the diving experience. Just 25 feet below the surface divers start seeing everything from moray eels and lobsters to nurse sharks.
