the city and me
I have finally made peace with the city.
It was during the month of October. Heat haze hits hard,
and while all I can think about
is a refreshing glass of lychee mint tea,
made exclusively on the café near my uni,
I still drank down the ice water
my mother had stored on the fridge, simply
because that’s all we have
in this hellhole of a city.
I have finally made peace with the city.
It was when I met my bunch, all four of us
Sitting round a square table.
Gulping diabetes down our system, talking, chattering,
Until I let myself some catharsis
Of pent-up insecurities and what ifs.
I have finally made peace with the city.
It was when I exchanged glances with the boy eating alone
On the new sushi spot that’s been well-known.
To be fair to him, I’ll tell you
that I, too, was on my own.
I have finally made peace with the city.
It was when my train sped up through the lush carpet of green
And my eyes had shifted to my screen.
None of the questions I bring
Had made it back to the hilt.
And though unanswered,
I am serene.
