Bootcamp and the journey so far
Nothing is impossible; the word itself says ‘I’m possible’! — Audrey Hepburn
Bootcamp is here, and I am psyched to get started! I mean, the last few months have all built up to this moment and all those sleepless nights watching YouTube videos and taking crash courses on Codeacademy only makes this feeling surge higher. If only I had known I was yet to get started.
We had always been told boot camp was a different kind of beast entirely. The number of resources I’ve had to consume in the last four days, the number of tools I’ve been introduced to and expected to get a handle on is enormous. From Pivotal tracker to trello, to Github and Git and Material CSS (Bootstrap 4 was proving difficult to work with), it’s been an array of interesting, yet challenging tools I’ve had to get used to. Lamentation is not part of the Andela core values which, by the way, is EPIC (Excellence, Passion, Integrity, and Collaboration). As such, in the spirit of embodying excellence, I had to fight through the sea of challenges to reach that blissful, satisfying shore of knowledge.
My most challenging experience so far has been getting accustomed to the GIT workflow. Prior to the boot camp, I had pushed codes to Github using the command line but had no idea I was meant to create separate branch for development (used to work on master branch. A Taboo!), track my files with the “Status” command, learn to NEVER merge or touch the master branch during development or staging, keeping track of versions using commit, making “atomic commits” and a lot more. All of these I had to get accustomed to while working on a project I would most likely be assessed on! You can imagine the pressure. It was one heck of a challenge, and from the look of things, more challenges lie ahead. Well, I made it this far despite all that, I guess the only way is up.
