I used to love guns, too. Now I think of them as emergency equipment, like fire extinguishers.

If your house is on fire, and you don’t have a fire extinguisher, it will probably burn to the ground. unless you’re lucky, and the fire department gets there in a time. If you do have a fire extinguisher, you may be able to put out the fire. Not guaranteed, but a possibility. There is a fire extinguisher in my apartment, to provide that possibility. I hope I never have to use it.

If you are attacked, or a burglar breaks into your house, and you don’t have a gun handy, the goblin will do with you what he wishes. He may kill you, unless you’re lucky, and the police get there in time. If you do have a gun handy, you may be able to stop the goblin, or convince him to go away. Not guaranteed, but a possibility. I keep a shotgun handy in my house, and carry a pistol where legal, to provide that possibility. I hope I never have to use them.

If you find guns exciting, and want to carry one for excitement, maybe you shouldn’t do it. If you’re sober, and carry a gun as emergency equipment, I salute you.
