Nice UI for what you want to do. Wrong thing to do. Links should NEVER open in a new window or tab by default, with the possible exception of a links page that is intended as a launching pad for lots of oft-browsed pages. The user has the ability to open in a new window/tab if she wants, by simply holding down platform-and-preferences-specific shift keys. Don’t second guess. The user does not have the ability to open the link in the same tab if the HTML says otherwise (except by dragging the link to the address bar, which is a royal pain).
