We Are Our Fire Extinguishers

First, re-read Mr. Wood’s piece replacing “guns” with “fire extinguishers”. Did it make sense? Probably not.

To me, a gun is an emergency tool, like a fire extinguisher. I hope and pray that I will never have to shoot anyone in self defense, just as I hope and pray that there will never be a fire in my apartment. But both are low-risk possibilities for which I’d be a fool to not be prepared.

Unfortunately, self defense cannot be effectively delegated. You have to do it yourself. When seconds count, the police are only minutes away. And their priorities may not match yours.

I hope and pray for a time when violence is unheard of (and I work for that every day, by meditating, and by pointing out the violence inherent in the concept of the state). Until then, I’ll keep my emergency tools.
