Sonification of data is an incredibly important field and needs to be expanded for both the blind and the sighted. Our ears tell us things our eyes do not, for example mechanics are as good as blind at seeing through metal, this is why they use their ears to “tune” an engine or motor.
Just as electronic binocular camcorders are used in the field to record and process images we need just the same for the ears, a device that can record sound, slow it down ,speed it up, shift its pitch up or down, compress it, expand it, filter it and so on.
The stars make literal sounds as they expand and contract which we can detect visually and translate back into sound. The sounds that whales and elephants make need to be sped up in time and raised in pitch for those sounds to be heard by humans as these animals hear them, the sounds made by small mammals, birds and insects need to be slowed down and lowered in pitch for the same reason.
Wherever there is energy exchange there is the potential for representation via sound, some of it above or below our range of hearing just as for light, but with frequency shifting technology light itself may be heard as sound, visible light is only one octave
Chemistry and particle physics behave according to rules that are almost musical, the progressions of chemical reactions and particle interactions are almost like musical progressions. Particles progress towards their lowest energy states, chemicals progress towards noble gas structures which are the least reactive, musical progressions toward resolutions and silence, the least tension.
Sound makes us better able to distinguish progressions across time while sight makes us better able to distinguish variations across space, thus sound gives us a better handle on time related phenomena than sight does, sight gives us a better handle on space related phenomena
In a sense we comprehend energy exchange across time better sonically while we comprehend mass distribution across space better visually, so by neglecting the sonification of data we inhibit our full potential in coming to a full understanding of time and energy
